Liege, European Capital of the Culture in 2015?
In 2015, a town of Wallonia will be chosen by Europe like European Capital of the Culture.
A cover of silence fell down on this information for the greatest profit of the town of Mons (Hainaut) which is only candidate to date.
That is perhaps not innocent.
Indeed, the burgomaster of the candidate city is not other than the president of the socialist party and the burgomaster of Liege belongs to the same political party.
Would that explain that?
But vis-a-vis a town of some 50.000 inhabitants, does one have to be unaware of the capital of the Principality of Liege which lasted nearly 1000 years, which has an orchestra philarmonic and an opera of international reputation?
Liege builds in this moment a new muséal unit, Médiacité and a station TGV conceived by the famous Spanish architect Calatrava.
Liege east one of the 5 only foreign cities having obtained the Legion of honor.
Liege had type-setters, writers, painters and sculptors who marked the history of European art.
Eco Liege-France is firmly decided, like very many inhabitants of Li2ege, to influence the administration of the city so that it presents its candidature and then that the best gains.
Two inhabitants of Li2ege, Alain De Clerck and François Schreuer, have just launched a petition to make pressure.
It is opened with all, so friendly inhabitants of Li2ege but of the countries bordering.
They are to be congratulated for this initiative which should bear its fruits.
I will thus ask you to agree to support their action in a combat which is right by signing this petition relating to the candidature of Liege
like European capital of the culture.
In connection with the town of Liege:
That it is by its thousand-year-old history or by its many contemporary creators who innovate in all the fields, by his institutions headlights as by his dense associative fabric, by his material and immaterial inheritance as by his popular culture, Liege is without any doubt the cultural main city of the South of the country.
Its geographical position moreover made of Liege, since hundreds of years, a footbridge between the Latin world and the Germanic world.
Today, by joining again bonds with Maastricht, Aachen or Hasselt, Liege east becoming again a place of European dialogue.
Cologne, Charleroi, Luxembourg or Brussels are moved away hardly and, with the TGV, Liege occupies from now on a central position in Europe.
Whereas Wallonia with the possibility of defending a candidature under European cultural capital, we affirm that all pleads so that it is Liege which is selected.
If Wallonia wants to be rectified, it must cease its policy of powdering and show abroad what it does of better.
The stake is indeed also economic: as many examples show it, to reach the row of cultural capital instigates to a significant degree the economy of an area.
Liege, also, needs today a federator project in the medium term, around of which can build an urban community and concretize its enormous potential.
With the horizon of 2015 and the programming which will have to be built, Liege would find a challenge with the measurement of the stake: that of its future.
We, signatories of this call, thus ask the principal political officials inhabitant of Li2ege to meet quickly to assemble a candidature under European capital of the culture in 2015.
